RELATIONAL LIFE THERAPY (RLT) + LOVE WISELY METHOD™

You’ve Figured Out a Lot Together. Why Does Your Relationship Still Feel This Hard?

“Others teach you skills; we deal with the part of you that won’t use them.” – Terry Real

You may have successful careers, a full life, a family you love, and a partnership that looks pretty solid from the outside.

You’re capable people. You solve problems every day.

And yet somehow, when it comes to each other, you keep ending up in the same place.

The same argument. The same defensiveness. The same shutdown. The same loneliness.

You’ve tried communicating better. You may have read the books, listened to the podcasts, had countless conversations, or even tried couples therapy.

And still, something happens between you that neither of you seems able to stop.

That’s because the problem usually isn’t that you don’t know how to communicate. It’s the pattern that takes over when communication gets hard.

With the Love Wisely Method™ and Relational Life Therapy (RLT), you don’t just “work on” your relationship… you transform it.

Why Couples Come to RelationshipWise

You Can Be Highly Capable People and Still Have No Idea How to Solve What Happens Between You

Many of the couples I work with are successful, ambitious professionals who are accustomed to functioning at a high level.

They make decisions. Lead teams. Manage complicated lives. Raise families. Solve problems. Get things done.

But the qualities that help you succeed everywhere else don’t always create connection at home.

Problem-solving can become fixing. High standards can become criticism. Independence can become emotional distance. Responsibility can become over-functioning and control. Drive can leave very little room for vulnerability.

And after years of repeating the same dynamic, two intelligent people can find themselves thinking: How can we be so good at so many things and so stuck here?

You’re not bad at relationships. You’ve gotten caught in a pattern.

I call it your Dance of Disconnection.

And once you can see the dance, you can start changing the moves.

You May Recognize Your Relationship Here

  • You keep having different versions of the same fight
  • One of you pushes for resolution while the other pulls away
  • Conversations quickly become criticism, defensiveness, or shutdown
  • You love each other but feel increasingly lonely inside the relationship
  • You’ve become excellent co-parents, roommates, or life managers but lost the feeling of being partners
  • Resentment has been quietly building
  • One or both of you feel unappreciated or taken for granted
  • Your sex life or emotional intimacy has faded
  • Trust has been damaged and you aren’t sure how to rebuild it
  • One person carries too much while the other feels constantly criticized
  • You understand the problem when things are calm but lose access to everything you know once conflict starts
  • You’re not necessarily ready to leave, but you also know you can’t keep doing this

The problem isn’t you versus your partner. It’s the pattern between you. And patterns can change.

Why Smart Couples Stay Stuck

Knowing Better Doesn’t Always Mean You Can Do Better in the Moment

Most couples don’t come to me because they’ve never heard of good communication.

They know they should listen. Stay calm. Validate. Take a break. Use “I” statements. Not interrupt.

Then the person they love says the one thing that hits the exact tender spot they have been carrying for years, and suddenly none of those skills are accessible.

That’s because relationship conflict doesn’t happen only at the level of logic.

When we feel rejected, controlled, criticized, abandoned, unimportant, unseen, or unsafe in the relationship, older protective strategies can quickly take over.

One partner pursues. The other withdraws. One gets louder. The other gets smaller. One starts managing everything. The other stops trying. One keeps score. The other disappears.

Before long, each person’s protection activates the other person’s protection. That is the Dance of Disconnection.

The Love Wisely Method™

My signature Love Wisely Method™ blends Relational Life Therapy (RLT), somatic awareness, practical relationship skills, and deeper identity-level change.

Instead of deciding who is right and who is wrong, we look at the system the two of you are creating together. What happens first? What does each of you make it mean? How does each person protect themselves? And how does that protection inadvertently trigger the other person?

RLT, developed by family therapist Terry Real, gives us a powerful framework for understanding these dynamics.

In RLT, we look at the moments when your Adaptive Child takes over, the younger part of you that learned what it had to do to stay protected, connected, valued, or in control.

Your Adaptive Child might attack. Defend. Please. Control. Withdraw. Go silent. Fix. Perform. Prove.

None of those responses came from nowhere. But what protected you earlier in life can create distance in an adult relationship.

Our work helps both of you recognize those moments and strengthen your ability to return to your Wise Adult, the part of you capable of accountability, boundaries, compassion, vulnerability, and real connection.

Map the Patterns

See your Dance of Disconnection clearly and understand the Protective Patterns each of you brings into it.

Mend the Wounds

Understand the fears, relational wounds, and protective responses underneath your strongest reactions.

Master the Skills

Practice communication, boundaries, regulation, accountability, and repair so you know what to do differently when you’re actually triggered.

Ignite the Spark

Create more affection, playfulness, intimacy, connection, and intentionality in the relationship you’re building together.

The goal isn’t just to understand your relationship better. It’s to live it differently.

Relational Life Therapy + Real Accountability

My work is strongly influenced by my certification and training in Relational Life Therapy (RLT), the relationship model developed by therapist and author Terry Real.

What I appreciate most about RLT is its combination of compassion and accountability.

We can understand why a protective strategy developed. And we can also be honest about what that strategy is doing to your relationship today.

Instead of spending all of our time deciding who’s right, we look at what happens to you when you feel hurt or threatened, what you do next, how that affects your partner, what your partner does in response, and what each of you needs to change to create something different.

RLT combined with the Love Wisely Method™ means we work with who you are underneath the pattern, what you actually do differently when the pattern appears and what vision you have for your relationship future.

What Starts to Change

  • Catch the Dance of Disconnection before it completely takes over
  • Understand what’s underneath each partner’s strongest reactions
  • Speak honestly without attacking or over-explaining
  • Hear feedback without immediately becoming defensive
  • Take space without creating more fear or distance
  • Repair after conflict instead of carrying resentment for days
  • Set clearer boundaries and make clearer requests
  • Rebuild emotional safety and trust
  • Bring back more affection, playfulness, and intimacy
  • Feel like partners instead of opponents

But the bigger transformation is this: You become the couple who can sit in the middle of a conversation that once would have become a three-hour fight or days of disconnection and realize: “We’re doing this differently now.”

Relationship Upleveled

My signature Relationship Upleveled Couples Coaching Program is a four-month experience for couples who are serious about creating lasting change.

It’s designed to give us enough time to do more than put out the latest fire.

We’ll work with the real situations happening in your relationship while also addressing the deeper patterns that keep recreating them.

The goal isn’t for you to depend on coaching. It’s for you to develop the awareness and skills to take care of your relationship long after our work together ends.

What Makes This Different

Better Communication Matters. But You Have to Be Able to Access It When You Are Upset

This work goes underneath the surface conversation. We don’t spend session after session debating who loaded the dishwasher incorrectly, who started the argument, or whose version of events is more accurate.

We use those moments to understand the deeper relational system underneath them.

Because the fight usually isn’t really about the dishes. It’s about: Can I count on you? Do I matter to you? Will you hear me without attacking me? Can I need you without losing myself? Can we disagree and still be okay? Are we actually on the same team?

That’s the level where lasting relationship change happens.

FAQs

Do we have to be in crisis to work with you?

Not at all. Many of the couples I work with still love each other deeply and have a lot that’s good in their relationship. They simply recognize a recurring pattern and want to address it before more resentment or distance builds.

You don’t have to wait until you’re completely disconnected to get support.

Is this therapy or coaching?

This is relationship and couples coaching.

I’m certified and trained in Relational Life Therapy (RLT), but RelationshipWise is a coaching practice, not a psychotherapy practice.

My work focuses on relationship patterns, relational skills, accountability, present-day behavior change, and the relationship you want to create together.

If clinical mental-health treatment is needed, I’ll recommend appropriate support.

You Already Know What Happens If Nothing Changes

Another version of the same argument. Another shutdown. Another night feeling disconnected.

You don’t have to know exactly how to fix it yet. You just have to be willing to look at the pattern.
