Couples Therapy vs. Couples Coaching: What’s the Difference?

If your relationship is struggling, you may have started searching for couples therapy near me, couples therapist Denver, marriage counseling, couples counselor, or relationship coach.

And then discovered that the differences aren’t always obvious.

Both couples therapy and couples coaching can support meaningful relationship change. But they’re not the same service.

Understanding that distinction can help you choose the support that’s appropriate for you.

What Is Couples Therapy?

Couples therapy is psychotherapy provided by a licensed mental-health professional.

Depending on their license, training, and approach, a couples therapist may assess or treat mental-health conditions and work with psychological symptoms alongside relationship issues.

Couples therapy may be particularly important when one or both partners need clinical mental-health treatment or when concerns fall outside the appropriate scope of coaching.

What Is Couples Coaching?

Relationship and couples coaching generally focuses on present patterns, goals, behavior change, relational skills, accountability, and the relationship you want to create going forward.

In my coaching work, we look at questions such as:

  • What keeps happening between you?
  • Who does each person become when conflict or vulnerability shows up?
  • What are your Protective Patterns trying to accomplish?
  • How are those patterns affecting your partner?
  • What does each person need to take responsibility for?
  • What skills would allow you to respond differently?
  • What kind of relationship do you want to intentionally create?

You can learn more about what this looks like in practice on my Couples Coaching in Denver + Online page.

Is Coaching Less Deep Than Therapy?

Not at all.

“Coaching” describes the professional scope of the service, not whether the conversation is meaningful or transformative.

My couples coaching can include deeper exploration of relational patterns, childhood adaptations, emotional triggers, nervous-system responses, boundaries, self-esteem, accountability, and intimacy.

The distinction is that I provide this work as a coach, not as a licensed psychotherapist, and I do not diagnose or provide mental-health treatment.

Where Does Relational Life Therapy Fit?

My work has an additional layer because I’m certified in Relational Life Therapy (RLT), the relationship model developed by Terry Real.

RLT is used by trained therapists and coaches.

I integrate its relational principles and tools into my coaching through the Love Wisely Method™.

That allows us to work with both sides of relationship transformation: understanding the deeper pattern and learning how to behave differently inside it.

Couples Coaching May Be a Good Fit If…

  • You are stuck in recurring conflict or disconnection
  • You both want to improve the relationship
  • You want practical tools as well as deeper pattern work
  • You’re willing to examine your own role in the dynamic
  • You want help with communication, boundaries, accountability, repair, and intimacy
  • You’re looking for growth-oriented relationship support rather than mental-health treatment

Couples Therapy May Be More Appropriate If…

You need diagnosis or treatment of a mental-health condition, require clinical psychological care, or have concerns that fall outside the appropriate scope of coaching.

If I believe another level or type of support would better serve you, I’ll tell you.

The goal isn’t to make coaching fit everyone. It’s to help you get the right kind of help.

What If My Partner Isn’t Ready?

Individual Relationship Coaching can help you understand your side of the relationship pattern, strengthen boundaries, regulate differently, and begin changing the part of the dynamic you control.

Couples who are a good fit for structured coaching may choose to work with me through Relationship Upleveled.

Still Not Sure?

You don’t have to determine all of this from a website.

During a Free Relationship Breakthrough Call, we can talk about what’s happening, what you’re hoping to change, and whether my coaching approach appears appropriate for your needs.
